"The potential for these laws to be misused and interpreted in ways that restrict religious expression is a real concern," he says.
The Executive Council of Australian Jewry has also expressed concern over the carve-out provisions for preachers, stating that controversial phrases like "globalise the intifada" or "death to the IDF" would not be banned under the current legislation.
Nationals, such as Matt Canavan and Bridget McKenzie, have indicated their opposition, with McKenzie, a shooting enthusiast, arguing that limiting gun ownership for law-abiding farmers and sportspeople is not the solution.
The Greens, while supportive of strengthening hate speech laws, are expected to push for amendments if the Coalition opposes the plan. They aim to be constructive in negotiations with the government while protecting freedom of political expression.
