A Fire at the White Lion Pub: Tragic Aftermath and Unanswered Questions
A devastating fire at the White Lion Pub in Rochdale on Sunday night (January 18) has left the community reeling. The former pub, located on York Street in Heywood, has been closed since a fatal crash in July 2024, when a car plowed into the building, causing extensive damage and resulting in the tragic death of 23-year-old Will Place.
The fire, which erupted shortly before 6 p.m., was swift in its intensity. Numerous fire engines rushed to the scene, and smoke billowed from the building, a stark reminder of the recent tragedy. The police and fire crews' immediate response was crucial in containing the blaze, but the question remains: what caused this fire?
Fire crews confirmed they were called to the fire at the derelict pub, and it's understood that a search for potential casualties was conducted amid the blaze, with no casualties found. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, leaving the community with more questions than answers.
A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) provided some insight: "Just before 6 p.m. on Saturday, 18th January, firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a derelict pub on York Street in Heywood. Three fire engines from Rochdale and Bury fire stations quickly arrived at the scene of the fire on the first floor of the building and used hose reels to extinguish the flames. Crews remain on-site as they conduct further safety checks and ensure the area is secure."
