A Major Water Crisis in West London: Holland Park's Burst Pipe and Its Impact
A recent incident in west London has left thousands of residents without water or with severely reduced water pressure. The cause? A large burst pipe near the Holland Park roundabout, which caused flooding that reached up to 3 feet 2 inches (1 meter) deep. This crisis unfolded at approximately 3:55 AM GMT on Wednesday, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) played a crucial role in managing the situation. Station commander Kris Seymour revealed that a 30-inch water main burst, leading to flooding that affected over 50 homes and a hotel across a one-mile radius. The LFB's swift action included using specialized equipment, such as an inflatable rescue boat, to evacuate residents and flood barriers to control the water flow, which has since subsided.
By 5:23 AM, the LFB declared the incident 'over for firefighters,' and residents were temporarily relocated to a nearby hotel. The scale of the disruption is significant, with an estimated 2,000 properties currently experiencing no water supply.
Thames Water, the local water utility, has acknowledged the issue and apologized for the inconvenience. They confirmed that customers in specific postcodes, including W12, W6, W4, W14, W8, W11, and W1H, may face low water pressure or no water supply. Thames Water's spokesperson assured residents that their engineers are on-site, controlling the pipe, and preparing to conduct necessary repairs.
The spokesperson also mentioned that the company is providing bottled water to properties on their priority services register.
