The recently introduced white or "light grey" shorts worn by the Ineos Grenadiers have sparked a variety of reactions since their debut last month. Despite the mixed feedback, these distinctive shorts have already contributed to a win for one of their riders, showcasing the team's renewed confidence.
Welsford's triumph came after two competitive bunch sprints, marking a significant milestone for his new team. This win now gives the British squad two victories out of their four WorldTour opportunities in 2026. If they maintain this level of performance, it could lead to a remarkable increase in their success compared to last year, potentially even quadrupling the results from their challenging 2024 season.
Reflecting on his experience during the race, Welsford remarked, "With just 2 kilometers left, I found myself riding alongside Kwia [Michał Kwiatkowski] and Swifty [Ben Swift], positioned around 80th in the pack. At that moment, I thought to myself, 'There’s no chance.'" This sentiment was shared in a post-race interview reported by Cyclingnews, illustrating the pressures and unpredictability of competitive cycling.
"So, for me to come here and win on a day that, on paper, didn’t seem to suit my strengths—still a sprint, but one of the toughest kinds—I am genuinely thrilled about that outcome," he added.
Ineos Grenadiers has kicked off the season with solid performances, securing two wins within just four days. With victories from both Sam Watson and now Welsford—the duo known as the "two Sams"—the team appears to be in a much more stable and promising position than in recent seasons. While they may not reach the elite status of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, they are proving to be competitive and successful, marking an encouraging beginning to the year.
